– IDW Publishing announced “Star Trek: Defiant,” a new ongoing series by writer Christopher Cantwell, artist Ángel Unzueta, and letterer Clayton Cowles. This will be the second series in IDW’s new universe of Star Trek continuity to be established in the upcoming “Star Trek” by Collin Kelly, Jackson Lanzing, Ramon Rosanas, and Lee Loughridge. Whilst the flagship title will focus on the grander impact of “the threats in the higher cosmos,” “Star Trek: Defiant” will focus on the more tangible, human impact of the “genocidal cult,” with protagonist Worf hunting the “the dangerous messiah” behind the cult, who is ultimately only a man. The series will follow Worf as he gathers characters like Spock, Ro Laren, and Lore aboard the U.S.S. Defiant, with the aim of achieving their shared goal despite their unlikely success. “Star Trek: Defiant” #1 will arrive in comic book shops and on digital platforms in March 2023.

– In further Star Trek news, there were a multitude of details revealed for the TV series at New York Comic Con:

  • Star Trek: Discovery‘s fifth season will add Callum Keith Rennie as a season regular in the role of Captain Rayner; Eve Harlow as “a former courier turned outlaw” called Moll; and Elias Toufexis as Moll’s “fiercely protective” partner, L’ak. A ‘first look’ at the series was also released, which kept plot details to a minimum and only teased that the crew on the Discovery will be seeking out “the greatest treasure in the known galaxy.” The fifth season of Star Trek: Discovery is expected in 2023.
  • Along with a teaser trailer for its imminent mid-season return, it was revealed that Star Trek: Prodigy is set to welcome returning actor Ronny Cox, in the role of Edward Jellico, now an Admiral, to the sci-fi franchise. Cox is set for a recurring role in the remainder of the season. The season will continue the adventures of the Protostar‘s crew, as they seek to evade their Starfleet pursuers, with the trailer also teasing the parentage of Brett Gray’s Dal. Star Trek: Prodigy returns on October 27 in the US and October 28 in the UK.
  • Finally, Star Trek: Picard debuted a teaser trailer, along with a host of casting announcements. Amanda Plummer is set to portray the third and final season’s villain, Vadic; Geordi La Forge’s daughters, Alandra and Sidney (both Starfleet ensigns), will be played by Mica Burton and Ashlei Sharpe Chestnut, respectively; Brent Spiner will play a new version of Lore; and Daniel Davis will return as the James Moriarty hologram. The teaser trailer shows the crew of the Enterprise being hunted down by Vadic, who wishes to destroy the Federation because of an unspecified grudge with Picard and his companions. Star Trek: Picard season three is set to premiere on Paramount+ on February 16.

– As part of DC’s Gotham City panel at NYCC, the publisher announced a new six-part miniseries called “Multiversity: Harley Screws Up the DCU,” by writer Frank Tieri and artist Logan Faerber. Details about the series were kept to a minimum and left to be inferred from the series’s title, although the cover artwork promises a number of catastrophes with Harley at the center; this is shown by Harley saying “Whoops!” amid wreckage that includes Superman’s cape flapping on the makeshift flagpole of Aquaman’s trident, which is itself stuck in Wonder Woman’s crashed Invisible Jet. “Multiversity: Harley Screws Up the DCU” will begin in March 2023. You can read the publisher’s full coverage of the panel here.

– Marvel and VIZ Media announced three manga publications set for release next year, including the first English edition of “Spider-Man: Fake Red” by Yusuke Osawa; the manga follows a teenager called Yu, who takes on the mantle of Spider-Man after finding one of the hero’s costumes abandoned in an alley. The other titles are a deluxe edition of Tsutomu Nihei’s 2003 comic “Wolverine: Snikt!,” and a hardcover collection called “Marvel Comics: A Manga Tribute,” which will present readers with “a fresh take on the Marvel Universe” courtesy of a host of Japanese artists like Yasuhiro Nightow, Peach Momoko, and Yoshida Amano. “Spider-Man: Fake Red” is scheduled to be published alongside the reprint of “Wolverine: Snikt!” on June 13, 2023, with “Marvel Comics: A Manga Tribute” following on July 18. You can check out the current cover art for all three publications, and see the full list of artists in the “Manga Tribute” collection here.

Variety reported that the upcoming film adaptation of Neil Gaiman and Dave McKean’s “Violent Cases” will star Ben Kingsley. The 1987 graphic novel sees a famous author recount his childhood memories of visiting Al Capone’s osteopath, and explores the impact that the stories he was told had on him; the film’s logline promises it will “[weave] a dark and twisting tale about stories, our memory, violence and the ways we can’t escape our past.” Kingsley is set to portray the osteopath, with further cast members yet to be added to the film. Violent Cases will be directed by Colm McCarthy, written by Mike Carey, and produced by Camille Gatin. A release date for the film has not been announced.

– HBO Max’s Harley Quinn will get a Valentine’s Day special in 2023, subtitled A Very Problematic Valentine’s Day Special, it was announced. The special will see the series’ voice cast reprise their roles, such as Kaley Cuoco as Harley Quinn and Lake Bell as Poison Ivy, and chronicle the first Valentine’s Day that Harley and Poison Ivy spend as a couple. The show’s supporting cast will also be involved in the special, with the announcement detailing that audiences will see how the characters spend the “gushiest, mushiest, most romantic day of the year.” A specific premiere date is yet to be revealed, but Harley Quinn: A Very Problematic Valentine’s Day Special is scheduled for February 2023.

– Mike Flanagan and the production company he currently co-runs, Intrepid Pictures, will no longer be a part of Netflix’s adaptation of “Something is Killing the Children,” it was revealed. Flanagan stated the departure was due to Netflix “[deciding] to kind of go in a different direction,” adding it is a “bummer” that they will no longer be involved in the project as “we love the source material.” The adaptation of James Tynion IV, Werther Dell’Edera, and Miquel Muerto’s comic is still set to go ahead, with Flanagan “[wishing] the absolute best” for the individuals taking up the reins of the adaptation. There is not a production time frame or release date known publicly for the show.

– Netflix released a full trailer for their upcoming “Addams Family” series, Wednesday, which offers two casting revelations: Christina Ricci will play Ms. Thornhill, a teacher at Nevermore Academy, and Uncle Fester is being portrayed by Fred Armisen. The trailer itself pulls back the curtain on the series, revealing that Wednesday Addams’s new school, Nevermore Academy, was created as a “safe haven” for children, “no matter who or what they are,” but Wednesday (Jenna Ortega), whilst actively trying to be disliked by her fellow students, is ultimately seeking the “truth” about the Academy, which is home to “secret societies, hidden libraries, [and] a homicidal monster.” Wednesday will debut on Netflix on November 23.

– Finally, the BBC released a new trailer and an air date for the upcoming final episode of Jodie Whittaker’s tenure as the lead character in Doctor Who. The episode, called “The Power of the Doctor,” will see the Doctor face off against multiple iconic villains, such as the Cybermen and the Daleks, and Sacha Dhawan’s the Master, whilst a “dozen of the world’s leading seismologists [go] missing” and “15 of the world’s most valuable paintings” disappear. The trailer closes with a shot of the Doctor surrounded by regeneration energy, crying out for companion Yas (Mandip Gill). The episode also serves as the conclusion to the end of showrunner Chris Chibnall’s time on the science fiction show. “The Power of the Doctor” is set to air on October 23. You can watch the trailer here.
