5 massive SEO and content shifts you need to master right now

Google’s focus on optimizing for the user never goes away, which is why its continual updates are always targeted at both SEO and content best practices.

These can range from core algorithmic changes and new features and products. For example, this can include SERP format changes and new ranking signals to avoid low-quality content to understand consumer behavior better. With Google’s focus on user experience, it is no surprise that they have been rolling out updates to improve search and site experiences.

Some of the most recent changes were aimed at improving page speed and Core Web Vitals, as well as product reviews which shows how much importance Google places upon providing quality content. The helpful content update (HCU) focuses on content for human users, rather than just for ranking (over-optimizing) and not really giving people anything useful when looking for information!

Some marketers have struggled to keep up with and adapt to these changes. Meanwhile, other brands are thriving.

Why?

Because they have learned to stay ahead of Google’s ever-evolving algorithms by focusing on quality content.

Savvy marketers know that they must have similar goals to Google. That means providing content that resonates, engages and converts – wherever, whenever and however consumers discover it.

It’s essential to not just look at where Google is today but where Google is heading over the next six months, next year and beyond. If you can keep pace with these momentous shifts, you can stay ahead of Google and your competition to dominate online in your industry.

The best way to stay ahead is to focus your efforts on content and optimization for the user, not the algorithm.

It’s time to start thinking forward – and fast! Below are five SEO shifts you need to master as we head into the latter part of this year.

1. From SEO just to rank to ‘SEO for content convergence and performance’

Just as content alone isn’t enough to guarantee SEO success, SEO alone isn’t enough to ensure that people will find and engage with your content.

As Danny Goodwin highlights in a recent article, content needs to:

  • Be created for a specific audience.
  • Feature expertise.
  • Be trustworthy and credible.
  • Meet the searcher’s want(s) or need(s).

The old days of irrelevant content and over-optimizing just for rank means that good SEO and content marketers have a unique opportunity. Those who use good SEO practices and align better with their content partners and writers stand to win in the long term.

Now, more than ever, data can help marketers understand consumer intent to create quality content that aligns with the customer journey and satisfy the human user.

Here’s how marketers can master this shift.

Ensure your content creation is based on intent-led data

Content marketing without data lacks purpose. Data is becoming a key source of business and content intelligence.

Utilize SEO data to understand user intent, define correct audiences, and provide relevant topics people want to read and engage with.

Track and measure these to gain the insights you need to create meaningful content that people want to consume and improve future content marketing efforts.

Foster search, social and content synergy

In combination, organic search, social and content help brands achieve their goals and objectives. Creating high-quality content with SEO in mind from the beginning boosts search visibility.

That great content can then be further amplified via social media, creating demand you can harvest later via search.

Maximize your search engine results page (SERP) footprint

Create and optimize high-ROI content like articles and videos to help people (by answering important or popular questions or providing practical information) or capitalize on trendy topics.

Then help your brand further stand out in the SERPs by winning real estate with featured snippets, site links, related questions, images, videos and tweets.

2. From mobile-first to ‘the need for mobile speed’

For years, Google told marketers about the coming shift to mobile-first – and it finally arrived. Today, optimizing for mobile search, devices, and usability is no longer optional. It’s mandatory.

This is especially true with Core Web Vitals, where the initial focus was on mobile rather than desktop.

While many brands have become mobile-ready, many forget that mobile speed matters the most. Google has begun to factor mobile loading times into its ranking algorithm, which means increasing site speed can help your website gain in the SERPs.

Here’s how marketers can master this shift.

Make your mobile SEO fast and furious

In addition to being attractive and easy to navigate, mobile websites must be fast. About 53% of mobile users leave sites that take more than three seconds to load, according to Google research.

Therefore, following technical mobile SEO best practices (e.g., image optimization, redirects, JavaScript, and CSS) is a necessary barrier to entry in today’s digital world.

Consider contextual mobile content

Focus on creating content that mobile users want and will find valuable. Typically, mobile users are in research mode – searching for information they need or need some inspiration.

Make sure your brand is there and influences that decision when they’re ready to convert, which is more likely to be on a desktop or in-store than on a smartphone.

Design for mobile

CDNs can be a great way to make your media load faster.

One way of doing this is by consulting Google’s latest developer documentation on image optimization and adhering to Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG).

Working with front-end developers ensures that lightweight crafted HTML5/CSS will help you stay within industry standards while focusing primarily on “is the user getting what they came for.” Ensure your design works well enough so as not to hinder their experience.

3. From local and hyperlocal to 'shopping online and in-store'

The hyperlocal opportunity has never been greater for marketers. Hyperlocal targeting lets you reach people based on their location. This is an excellent way for brands to capitalize on "near me" searches and "I-want-to-go" micro-moments and become hyper-relevant and valuable.

It's worth noting that the COVID-19 pandemic caused many shoppers to choose between online shopping vs. in-store. There's been a steady increase of people buying from websites on their phones with just one click, according to a Digital Commerce 360 ecommerce study.

Here’s how marketers can master this shift.

Own local search

Make sure critical contact information that people search for is prominent or easy to find. This includes name, address, phone, hours and directions.

Hyperlocal optimization = hyper important

Google's personalized hyperlocal results give more visibility to smaller geographic locations.

Optimize your Google Business Profile, create localized content and landing pages, use local business Schema markup and monitor the performance of your local keyword rankings.

Build on the intersection of local and mobile

People who do local searches on smartphones have higher intent.

Optimizing for local also means optimizing for users who are on the go. These people have different needs and expectations than those doing local searches on other devices.

Understand and adapt

Some people still prefer visiting brick-and-mortar stores when they need something.

However, most consumers now search for products first through Google or other platforms before making purchases at physical locations as well. Monitor how these trends change over time by tracking ranking fluctuations across industries.

4. From text to voice to 'multiple search entry points'

To be successful in today's competitive market, marketers need to build comprehensive strategies that drive interactions at every search entry point. This includes TV sets and smartphones and extends to IoT devices like smart plugs or lightbulbs.

As marketers collect this data, we become a virtual user group, gathering information and understanding where what and why people search.

Here’s how marketers can master this shift.

Understand the customer experience

From product development, customer acquisition, and sales through to service, post-sales support, and loyalty, consumers are searching at every stage to find just what they need at any particular moment.

Search is a window into the user experience every step of the way, so utilize it.

Ensure consumers have an enjoyable experience from start to finish

You must provide them with what they desire: seamless experiences across all channels without any unnecessary hassle or hindrance.

Get smart about intelligent agents

Many voice searches happen at home, in the car, or on the go, resulting in a more connected world. These intelligent agents use semantics, search history, and user interests and behaviors to provide the best results.

So, make sure content is aligned with the intent and interests of customers at the right moment of the decision journey. Be the best answer.

5. From data to machine learning to 'intelligent automation'

Google relies on machine learning, in the form of RankBrain, MUM, and its core technologies, to make sense of the massive amounts of data and deliver the best possible search results for users.

We know that the pandemic helped accelerate every organization's journey to digital transformation. The next step in that process is evolution and who can progress with ease, speed and efficiency.

As marketers, we, too, must turn to data science and machine learning to understand our audience's intent, interests, and behavior so we can deliver and personalize the content they want.

Here’s how marketers can master this shift.

View data as a source of truth

Martech stacks are being built around data integrations and performance because we simply have too much data and not enough analysts or hours in the day to make sense of it all.

To capitalize on demand, spot patterns, and stay ahead of the competition, marketers need to go beyond the "what" of data to understand the "when" and "why" of analytics.

Utilize AI and machine learning

Machine learning helps marketers spend less time analyzing data and more time creating content that will engage and influence prospects and customers.

Let AI and machine learning deliver actionable insights about your audience and content performance. Do not let it write content for you

Define metrics and measurement

Data allows marketers to make better and more accurate decisions more quickly. Define the metrics that matter to your brand, and monitor your search and content data.

This will allow you to track your progress, iterate and improve your content production and organic search optimization for greater visibility and a greater share of voice.

Conclusion

SEO and data are essential for a successful integrated digital strategy with tangible ROI.

By understanding the five points above and consistently measuring your results, you will demonstrate that creating compelling, engaging, thoughtful content is the path to revenue and genuinely worth the investment.

SEO plays a vital role in providing insights, optimizing and measuring content – content has become the cornerstone of any good SEO campaign.

Today's Wordle Is Slightly Easier Than Usual

Today's Wordle shouldn't be too tough to solve. We'll dig into today's Wordle puzzle later in the article, for those looking for some hints or clues. However, if you haven't done the puzzle yet, you may not want to scroll to the bottom of the article as we'll eventually discuss the answer.

For those who somehow have missed out on the Wordle craze so far, the rules of the game are simple: players have six tries to guess a five letter word. Players receive clues based on which letters their guess shares with the correct word. A letter shaded in yellow means that letter also appears in the correct word, but in a different letter location. A letter shaded in green means that letter appears in the same spot in the correct word.

On average, it takes Wordle players about 4 tries to correctly guess a daily puzzle, although a few puzzles can be significantly trickier. The past few months has featured a number of tough puzzles, with FOUND breaking streaks due to sharing a 4-letter word ending with several other words, and NYMPH eluding players due to its lack of a traditional vowel.

So, what about today's Wordle? Players shouldn't have too much difficulty, as it contains a set of common letters arranged in a unique manner. Remember that players on normal mode can eliminate multiple guesses at once by using a guess with a word that can eliminate multiple possibilities. For example, if you need to choose between POUND, ROUND, and SOUND, it might be easier to burn a guess with a word like PURRS to determine which one of those answers is correct.

Still stumped on today's Wordle puzzle? The answer to Wordle 467 is...SCALD. Be sure to check out WordleBot if you want some tips on how to improve your Wordle game. WordleBot notes that it takes an average of 3.9 tries to solve today's puzzle. 98% of Wordle players were able to figure out the puzzle within 6 guesses.

By Jay Ripton on Small Business UK - Advice and Ideas for UK Small Businesses and SMEs

Some of these digital marketing trends have proved successful in previous years too

The recent turn of events has digitised business operations throughout the world. Business leaders from various industries are using technology to run their commercial ventures.

Businesses are extensively leveraging digital marketing to up their game. With the increasing advancements in this area, it is evident that this trend will continue to thrive as we move into 2023.

Let’s learn more about digital marketing and its successful trends.

What is digital marketing?

Are you an entrepreneur looking for ways to expand your business? If yes, you should incorporate the progressing idea of digital marketing in your branding strategy.

Digital marketing uses technologies and online avenues to promote your products and services to people beyond your service area. Also known as internet marketing, this process uses digital communication to spread brand awareness and increase sales.

According to a Forrester report, digital marketing spending by companies will reach $146bn (£135bn) by 2023. With the existing and new digital marketing trends in 2023, you can prepare yourself to take your business to phenomenal heights.

Exploring 7 effective digital marketing trends in 2023

Out of plenty of business strategies, a wise entrepreneur will always opt for the ones that are lucrative for his venture. Some of the top digital marketing trends that will be effective for your company in the long run include;

1. Real-time messaging remains effective

Personalising the sales is the secret to making your customer choose your products and services. You can achieve this by real-time messaging with your potential customer. Several chatting platforms can help you in getting to know your customers better.

You can create a customised sales strategy for every customer using their data from the chat between you and them. It spikes the chances of a successful sale as your customer will think that the product or service is exclusively designed for them.

2. Attract users through video-based content

Everybody loathes the idea of reading long texts on websites. However, people are attracted to moving graphics as they provide more information in less time. Thus, it is ideal to incorporate video-based content in your digital marketing strategy to make the user stay longer on your webpage.

Videos are captivating and successfully capture the attention of the user. Use engaging videos to make the audience stop and stare at your webpage. It is an excellent way to promote your business by including the top selling points in your video.

3. Influencer marketing continues to gain popularity

We engage with the stories and posts of our favorite celebrities and influencers daily. So, why not use their extensive social media reach to create a buzz about your business?

Consider the trendy idea of influencer marketing if you want to attract maximum customers to your business. This idea involves social media marketing, using socially influential people and organisations to market your products and services.

The innovative idea of marketing your niche through influencers has recently become the talk of the town. It is because influencer outreach is far better than traditional marketing, which elevates the chances of affordably acquiring more customers.

All you need to do is hire an influencer who belongs to the same niche as your business and has a substantive following so that your brand’s message can reach maximum people. Following that, you can strike a deal with them to promote your brand in return for adequate money or complimentary products and services from your brand.

4. Email marketing never falls out of fashion

is one of the oldest yet most compelling digital marketing trends. Most (82 per cent) B2B marketers say that using email newsletters is still their go-to method for brand promotion.

Have you ever wondered why this method is still relevant when we have more functional and practical social media communication methods today? A prime reason is that content often fails to reach people through social media as it is heavily filtered. However, such is not the case with emails – they convey your message directly to the user without the threat of being brushed aside due to privacy and filters.

>See also: Why email marketing is still crucial in 2021

5. Get smart with artificial intelligence

Modern digital marketing trends are all about using smart demeanors like artificial intelligence to grow your business. AI marketing stores data of your potential customers to help you make automated and informed decisions in milliseconds.

AI observes your audience, economic trends and other aspects affecting your marketing strategy. It uses data analytics to ensure you target the right pool of customers at the right time. Several brands use AI for effective marketing and have already started to reap its extensive benefits.

6. User-generated content is growing

User-generated content refers to any online material created by someone not representative of your brand. These people can be your customers, brand loyalists, employees – or anyone. User-generated content includes customer reviews or ratings and back stories about the brand that employees share.

Using user-generated content is a brilliant emerging concept in digital marketing. It shows the positive aspects of the brand, posted by people who have no direct connection to your business.

7. Consider outsourcing to marketing agencies

Digital marketing is a vast field that comprises various innovative digital trends. It is challenging to incorporate all the emerging trends at a time by yourself; therefore, a constructive approach to expanding your business would be to hire a competent digital marketing firm.

Obtaining professional digital marketing services would boost your business in a limited time. The right digital marketer will use different innovative techniques and the latest marketing trends to increase awareness of your business worldwide.

Assessing the importance of digital marketing

Several reports have shown that 55 per cent of marketing in businesses worldwide has gone digital. The remarkable effect on businesses through digital marketing has increased its use in the world’s major industries.

Let’s see some of the many gains of using digital marketing in businesses;

  1. You can get global reach for your business by using digital marketing
  2. Digital marketing phenomenally increases your chances of sales as it adopts a more personalised marketing approach with each customer
  3. There are lower costs and manpower required to conduct internet marketing. As a result, it is a suitable option for start-up businesses
  4. You can use multiple strategies and forums to market your products digitally. This offers a variety of customers, which expands your business in less time
  5. Digital marketing techniques are easy to learn and apply
  6. The results of digital marketing are much faster than traditional marketing strategies
  7. Using technology to market your niche allows you to know your customers better so that you can improve your products and services accordingly for them
  8. Digital marketing offers optimisation and analysis. This provides you with strategic insights into your performance, which can help to perfect future business operations. It also makes you aware of your mistakes so you can fix them quickly
In a nutshell

Digital marketing is thriving in the business arena and will continue to do so in the years to follow. It offers an exceptional global reach to take your business to unprecedented success. The existing and emerging digital marketing trends have entirely transformed the way businesses used to operate.

It’s time to clear some space in your Pokemon bag as we check out the heaviest Pokémon of all time!

Pokemon come in all shapes and sizes, from tiny bugs and cute electric mice to huge kaiju-esque creatures.

With such a massive variety of Pokemon to find and collect, we here at Retro Dodo thought we’d take a look at which ones would be the most impressively heavy creatures in all of the games.

Are they all Legendary? Or are some just regular Pokemon who happen to be much larger than the average ‘pocket’ monster?

15. Giratina (Altered Forme) Giratina Altered Forme - top heaviest pokemon

Though sitting at the bottom of the heaviest Pokemon list, you could hardly accuse the Altered Forme of Giratina of being a lightweight – just for an admittedly extreme comparison, it’s 1653.3lbs heavier than the lightest Pokemon, Gastly!

Giratina is a Ghost/Dragon type Pokemon and can be found in both Origin and Altered Formes. The Origin Forme – which sees Giratina lose its legs and become more like a very sinister-looking snake – is lighter, but its elongated tail makes it taller overall.

Giratina first appeared in the fourth generation games, which began with Pokemon Diamond and Pearl.

14. Zamazenta (Crowned Shield) Crowned Shield Zamazenta

Weighing in at 1730.6lbs in its Crowned Shield form, Zamazenta is a Legendary Pokemon from the eighth generation titles Pokemon Sword and Pokemon Shield.

In order to transform Zamazenta into its Crowned Shield state, players must give it the Rusted Shield item.

The Rusted Shield must be very weighty, as the transformation sees the Pokemon become an awful lot heavier without actually changing in size!

Of course, it could be argued that it’s not the Pokemon itself that’s heavy, but with the shield item physically transforming Zamazenta, we believe the creature has earned its spot on the heaviest Pokemon list!

13. Melmetal Melmetal

Known as the ‘Hex Nut Pokemon’, Melmetal’s weight is pretty impressive – coming in at 1763.7lbs.

Of course, an eight foot tall creature made entirely of metal (Melmetal is a Steel type Pokemon) is bound to weigh quite a bit. Still, Melmetal really is quite an impressively heavy Pokemon!

Though Melmetal evolves from Meltan, interestingly it can only evolve this way in Pokemon Go.

Melmetal’s first appearance was in the seventh generation of Pokemon games, which kicked off with Pokemon Sun and Pokemon Moon.

12. Glastrier Glastrier - top heaviest pokemon

Upon first glance, Glastrier doesn’t look like a Pokemon that would feature on the heaviest Pokemon list.

However, weighing in at 1763.7lbs, it’s clearly a creature that’s earned its spot here!

Glastrier is an Ice type Pokemon that was introduced in the eighth generation games, Pokemon Sword and Pokemon Shield.

However, it can only be found in an area which is located on DLC for those games: The Crown Tundra.

11. Calyrex (Ice Rider) Ice Rider Calyrex

Another Pokemon from the eighth generation titles. Still, this entry is a bit of a cheat.

Why, you ask? Well, that’s because Calyrex alone isn’t a heavy Pokemon at all – with a weight of just 17lbs.

Yet, in Ice Rider form, Calyrex’s weight becomes 1783.8lbs – and that’s because it’s actually bonded with a Glastrier!

And yes, we know that Glastrier’s weight plus Calyrex’s weight doesn’t equal 1783.8lbs – but we don’t make the rules.

10. Stakataka Stakataka - top heaviest pokemon

An Ultra Beast who first appeared in Pokemon Sun and Moon, Stakataka is a hefty Rock/Steel type Pokemon – weighing 1807.8 lbs.

In its own way, Stakataka’s appearance here could be seen as just as much of a cheat as the Ice Rider form of Calyrex – as it’s actually made up of lots of smaller stone creatures, who of course way far less individually.

Yet – again, just like Calyrex’s Ice Rider form – the Pokedex does treat Stakataka as a single creature, so we will too!

9. Dialga (Origin Forme) Dialga Origin Forme

The more recognisable, standard Dialga is pretty hefty – not enough to make it onto this list, a 1505.8 lbs – but its Origin Forme is enough to push it into the top 10 of the heaviest Pokemon list!

Dialga first appeared as a Legendary Pokemon in Diamond and Pearl (which you will also find on our best selling Nintendo DS games list), but its Origin Forme arrived in Pokemon Legends: Arceus.

At 23 feet, it’s six feet taller than ‘standard’ Dialga and weighs a huge 1873.9 lbs too.

8. Guzzlord Guzzlord

Another Ultra Beast, Guzzlord first appeared in the seventh generation games Pokemon Sun and Pokemon Moon.

A Dark/Dragon type Pokemon, Guzzlord is a ‘Junkivore’ Pokemon that can swallow whole buildings and even mountains.

That likely accounts for its massive weight of 1957.7 lbs!

7. Mudsdale Mudsdale - top heaviest pokemon

The legs of Mudsdale are coated in layers of protective mud. It’s the weight of this mud which allows Mudsdale to kick so forcefully.

It also adds to Mudsdale’s considerable overall weight, which comes in at an enormous 2028.3 lbs.

Mudsdale is another Pokemon from the seventh generation games; it seems as if many Pokemon that originated in Sun and Moon were an awful lot bigger – and heavier – than the creatures Pokemon Trainers had seen before!

6. Metagross (Mega Metagross) Mega Metagross

Standard Metagross isn’t light as a feather, weighing in at a massive 1212.5 lbs.

Yet Mega Metagross – which is one Metagross, one Metang, and two Beldum linking up to form a ridiculously hefty Pokemon – is a real heavyweight at 2078.7 lbs!

Mega Metagross is a Steel and Psychic type Pokemon, which – despite Metagross debuting way back in the third generation games Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire, which we ranked top of our best Pokemon GBA games list – was only made possible in Pokemon Sun and Moon.

5. Groudon Groudon - top heaviest pokemon

Another Legendary Pokemon, Groudon is a Pokemon who first appeared in third generation titles Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire.

A Ground type Pokemon, Groudon’s weight – despite not being particularly tall, at 11.5 feet – is a significantly heavy 2094.4 lbs!

4. Eternatus Eternatus

Eternatus is also known as the ‘Gigantic Pokemon’ and it’s easy to see why.

At a height of over 65 feet and weighing 2094.4 lbs, this Poison/Dragon type Pokemon is absolutely enormous!

Making its debut in generation eight – Pokemon Sword and Pokemon Shield – Eternatus is a genuinely impressive creation.

Eternatus – thought to be around 20,000 years old – absorbs energy from the Galar region’s lands too, which makes this Pokemon incredibly powerful.

3. Groudon (Primal Groudon) Primal Groudon - top heaviest pokemon

Yes, we’ve already seen the ‘basic’ form of Groudon – but what happens when it holds the Red Orb?

That’s when you get Primal Groudon, a bigger, scarier form of Groudon who’s a Ground and Fire type Pokemon.

Growing five feet taller and weighing in at a crushing 2204.0 lbs, Primal Groudon is one Pokemon you don’t want to be messing around with!

2. Cosmoem Cosmoem

Introduced in generation seven (Pokemon Sun and Pokemon Moon), Cosmoem is undoubtedly the smallest Pokemon on the heaviest Pokemon list.

Though only 4 inches in size, it weighs an incredible 2204.4 lbs!

Cosmoem has incredible density and an outer shell that’s harder than any known material.

This Protostar Pokemon – as it’s also known – evolves from the Psychic type Pokemon Cosmog, which weighs just 0.2lbs.

Once Cosmog reaches level 43, it clearly gets an awful lot heavier as it evolves into the very impressive Cosmoem.

Though Cosmoem is the exact same weight as Primal Groudon, we felt that its tiny size made it a more impressive Pokemon – which is why it takes second place on our heaviest Pokemon list!

1. Celesteela Celesteela - top heaviest pokemon

Another Pokemon that debuted in generation seven’s Pokemon Sun and Pokemon Moon – which we ranked highly on our best Pokemon games list – Steel/Flying type Pokemon Celesteela is also an Ultra Beast.

Truly impressive in size, Celesteela is just over thirty feet tall and weighs in at 2204.4lbs.

Despite being the same weight as Primal Groudon and Cosmoem, Celesteela’s huge height – pretty much putting it completely at odds with the minuscule Cosmoem – is what puts it firmly in first place on the heaviest Pokemon list.

What Is The Heaviest Pokemon Of All Time

There you have it! You read it here first, and it’s the incredibly tall Celesteela at a whopping 2204.04lbs!

Computer Science is Growing in K-12 Schools, But Access Doesn’t Equal Participation

Computer science has a wider footprint in schools than ever before, but there are differences when it comes to who has access to computer courses and who’s enrolling.

That’s according to the latest State of Computer Science Education report, released last week by the Code.org Advocacy Coalition, Computer Science Teachers Association, and the Expanding Computing Education Pathways Alliance.

While more than half of high schools nationwide—53 percent, to be precise—offer computer science, disparities in access and participation reveal themselves among traditionally underrepresented groups. Girls, for instance, make up just one-third of high school computer science students nationally.

Previous studies have noted that schools serving well-off communities are more likely to offer computer science than less-resourced schools. But this new study notes that even at schools where coding courses are offered, participation can be unequal.

Looking to a Tech-Driven Future

The report makes a case for computer science as part of the solution for pandemic-related learning loss, touting its high level of engagement. And these days computing skills can be a potential career-booster for students as demand for a tech-savvy workforce increases, the report argues.

Jhone Ebert, Nevada’s state superintendent of public instruction, says computer science is about more than coding. Students learn problem solving, communication and how to bounce back from failure.

“Coding is one of those areas where it's a skill, but it’s also an art,” Ebert says. “When you have students who are engaged in the content, they want to learn. They fail, but they learn something new out of that failure.”

Nevada is one of several states that have adopted all nine of Code.org’s policy recommendations, including recently making computer science a graduation requirement. Computer science is offered in all grades, from kindergarten through high school.

“I never would have taken the computer science class if I didn’t have to, but now I really like coding and problem solving,” Addison McCune, a Nevada 7th grader, is quoted as saying in the report. “I was the first student ever at my school to finish all of the Python lessons. I like the challenge.”

While about 95 percent of students in Silver State have access to computer science, the report states that only 3.5 percent of students are enrolled in a computer science class. Ebert expects that percentage to increase as students take their required computer science classes in high school.

“Sometimes people think about computer science just as technology, and there’s something magical behind a curtain,” Ebert says. “The fact is there is coding in music, art work—in everything that we do. It’s something that everyone can participate in.”

Bridging Barriers to Access

When it comes to who is participating, white high school students nationally make up 48 percent of high school students and 48 percent of 9-12 computer science students, according to the report. Latinos are 27 percent of students and 20 percent of computer science participants.

Black students make up 15 percent of high school students and 16 percent of those enrolled in computer science, while Asian students are 5 percent of high schoolers and 11 percent of computer science students.

The disparity is most pronounced among economically disadvantaged students, who make up 52 percent of high schoolers but only 36 of those enrolled in computer science classes.

The report found that disparities in participation are the lowest in K-8 classes. Elementary school girls make up nearly half of computer science students, but that percentage falls to 44 percent in middle school and 32 percent in high school.

New Silent Hill Game Seemingly Revealed in Leak

A new game in Konami's Silent Hill franchise seems to have been revealed in a leak via a ratings website. In recent months, rumors and reports have continued to circle in great numbers suggesting that Konami is planning a major return to Silent Hill in the future. And while the longtime Japanese publisher has yet to properly announce any new Silent Hill installments, this leak in question may have spilled the beans a bit early.

Spotted on a South Korean video game ratings site, a new listing for an all-new entry in the Silent Hill series was discovered. This game in question is said to be titled "Silent Hill: The Short Message" and is set to be published by UNIANA, which is a company that often publishes titles from Konami within Korea. Further details associated with the project such as its launch date, platforms, and developer were not detailed, so it's hard to know what to make of this game for the time being.

As mentioned, rumors and reports have been circling in great numbers over the past year or more in relation to Silent Hill. Some of these reports have claimed that Konami is in the process of collaborating on numerous different Silent Hill projects at this point in time. While one of these games could potentially be Silent Hill: The Short Message, other leaks have suggested that a full-blown remake of Silent Hill 2 could also be in development as well.

Given how many rumors we have seen in the past with Silent Hill, it's important to take this latest leak with a grain of salt. Even though leaks of this nature from ratings websites tend to have more legitimacy than normal, until Konami itself announces that Silent Hill: The Short Message is real, it's better to just hope for the best and expect the worst.

What do you think about this new leak associated with the Silent Hill series? Do you believe that Konami will be making a new reveal associated with the franchise in the coming weeks or months? Be sure to let me know either down in the comments or reach out to me on Twitter at @MooreMan12.

Data is fundamentally invaluable to engineering firms, but its history and usefulness have been fluid up to this point. The story starts in the 1980s when the architectural engineering and construction, or AEC, industry began to fully embrace digital transformation. What started as transitioning from pen and paper to computer is now a full-scale digital mindset aimed at enhancing workflows and increasing revenue significantly.

IT audit

Around 2000, the evolution entered its next phase with the emergence of building information modeling, or BIM. Here, project data could be integrated within a single platform and across a project’s lifecycle, leading to a new standard in accuracy and reliability.…

'Simply uneconomical': Hydrogen could hike heating bills by 90 per cent, report warns
'Simply uneconomical': Hydrogen could hike heating bills by 90 per cent, report warns

Government urged to 'listen to the economics and science' ahead of making final decision on whether to back wider roll out hydrogen heating systems

Replacing fossil gas with hydrogen in home heating systems could result in energy bills almost doubling over the coming three decades, new research has warned.

A report produced by energy consultancy Cornwall Insight on behalf of the pro-renewables MCS Charitable Foundation forecast that using hydrogen for home heating could be between 70 and 90 per cent more expensive than fossil gas.

Jitendra Patel, senior consultant at Cornwall Insight, said the results showed it was "simply uneconomical" to use a 100 per cent hydrogen fuel for heating homes.

The research is published as the government mulls its options for decarbonising home heating, with a final decision on rolling out a 20 per cent hydrogen blend in the UK's home heating network from 2026 onwards expected to be made next year.

On Friday in the House of Commons, Business and Energy Minister Jacob Rees-Mogg signalled his support for transitioning homes on to hydrogen heating. "I think hydrogen is ultimately the silver bullet," he said. "I can see how you create it from renewable sources, because you have the wind power when people aren't drawing from the electricity system. We can use it as an effective battery and it can then, with some adjustments, be piped through to people's houses to heat them during the winter."

Advocates of hydrogen heating maintain that supplies of low carbon hydrogen are expected to increase rapidly in the coming years and switching gas networks to run on the zero carbon gas could provide a less disruptive means of decarbonising heating than requiring millions of homes to switch to entirely new technologies for heating and cooking. They also predict that the cost of hydrogen could fall significantly in the coming years as new green hydrogen plants capable of harnessing low cost renewable power to produce hydrogen come online.

But the use of hydrogen to decarbonise heating remains contentious. Energy experts and the United Nations have argued that heating is one of the lowest valued applications for hydrogen, warning the limited reserves of the low carbon fuel should be reserved for industries that are less amenable to electrification, such as shipping, steelmaking, chemicals production, and long-haul aviation.

Moreover, critics have warned the conversion of the gas grid to enable a hydrogen-fossil fuel mix or pure hydrogen gas could ultimately slow the decarbonisation of buildings in the UK, because it would "lock in" fossil gas and the infrastructure required to pump it to homes around the country for the decades to come, while potentially discouraging investment in zero and low carbon heating solutions, such as electric heat pumps and heat networks.

There are also concerns about the environmental credentials of 'blue hydrogen', which is produced using fossil gas and carbon capture and storage .

MCS Charitable Foundation, a charity whose work focuses on decarbonising homes, heat, and energy, said the findings set out in Cornwall Insight's report added weight to the "fast-growing body of evidence" that showed the low carbon fuel is "economically and environmentally unviable as a source of home heating".

Dr Richard Hauxwell-Baldwin, the group's research and campaigns manager, said pursuing hydrogen for home heating would lock in high energy prices for a generation.

"At a time when we need policies in place to cut both bills and carbon, pursuing hydrogen for home heating seems a strange policy choice," he said. "The fossil fuel industry is lobbying hard to get hydrogen pumped into homes around the country as it would allow them to continue their otherwise unsustainable businesses. But this would be a disaster for already hard-pressed households and the environment."

The report authors conclude it would be better for government to invest in other technologies for the decarbonisation of heat, such as heat pumps and heat networks.

Commenting on the findings, Juliet Philips, senior policy advisor at environmental think tank E3G, said: "We are in a cost-of-living crisis caused by exposure to international fossil fuel markets. In order to bring down bills permanently, we need to invest in solutions which permanently get us off gas - such as home insulation, heat pumps and renewables."

Philips urged the government to "listen to the economics and science" ahead of making any decisions for hydrogen for heating, noting that it would be consumers that would end up footing the bill if they ignored the evidence.

The Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) was considering a request for comment at the time of going to press.
